Functional Capacity Assessments (Identified Needs Assessment)

A Functional Capacity Evaluation is a comprehensive review of your abilities for living independently. This review helps you and the NDIS understand your support needs, now and into the future. The areas we review include:

Self-care (i.e. grooming, housekeeping, being active in the community and managing your life)
Productivity (i.e. work, school, volunteering)
Leisure (i.e. what you do for fun, your friends/family, hobbies)

Why should I do a Functional Capacity Assessment?

Functional Assessments are used to help you plan for allocating NDIS funding to help you achieve your goals, in a safe manner; and liaise with the NDIS to increase your NDIS funding. Based on the findings of Functional Capacity Assessments, tailored interventions and strategies can be developed. These interventions may recommend other assessments and treatments:

Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessments
Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA) Assessments
Assistive Equipment and Technology (AT) Assessment
Sensory Assessments
Short-Term Occupational Therapy treatment

How are they conducted?

Occupational Therapist comes to your home (preferably in person, but Telehealth Assessments can be conducted). This assessment typically takes about two hours and involves discussing:

The things you can do
The things you have difficulty doing
Your goals for maintaining/ improving your life
Making a plan to help you achieve your goals

Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessments

Supported Independent Living is one type of support to help you live in your home. It includes help or supervision with daily tasks, like personal care or cooking meals. It helps you live as independently as possible, while building your skills.

Why should I do a Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessment?

If you need high levels of Support Worker support daily, Supported Independent Living is for people with higher support needs, who need some level of help at home most the time.

So if you depend on other people to help you with basic activities of daily living such as getting in and out of bed, bathing, cleaning the house, managing your emotions or getting along with other people, you may need Supported Independent Living.
Supported Independent Living assessments identify the amount of Support Worker support you need, the timing of this support, and whether it can be shared with other people.

How are they conducted?

Supported Independent Living assessments are usually conducted after Functional Capacity Assessments. The Occupational Therapists uses information from the Functional Capacity Assessment, but they also collect additional information on previous living arrangements and the difficulties encountered in previous living arrangements (i.e. with family, friends or in share houses) to justify increased Support Work involvement.

Specialised Disability Accommodation (SDA) Assessments

Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a range of housing designed for people with extreme functional impairment or very high support needs.
SDA dwellings have accessible features to help residents live more independently and allow other supports to be delivered better or more safely.

Why should I do a Specialised Disability Accommodation assessment?

NDIS participants who are unable to live in family or private rental accommodation due to their disabilities may request a Specialist Disability Accommodation assessment.
Participants eligible for SDA have an extreme functional impairment or very high support needs such as:

Limited mobility
Requiring ceiling hoists
Requiring constant supervision to prevent wandering/absconding
Behavioural challenges such as punching holes in walls, extreme violence or wandering
And may others

How are they conducted?

Specialised Disability Accommodation assessments are usually conducted after Functional Capacity and Supported Independent Living assessments. The Occupational Therapist uses information from these assessments, but they also collect additional information on housing needs such as wheelchair accessibility, robust walls and security. Furthermore they look into preferences for housing location, the type of home, and whether the participant can live with other people. The NDIS makes decisions regarding SDA suitability based on these assessments. The NDIS may ask the Occupational Therapist for more information to support the application.

Assistive Equipment and Technology (AT) Assessments

Assistive technology is equipment or devices that help you do things you can’t do because of your disability. This equipment and technology may also help you do activities of daily living more easily or safely.

Why should I do an Assistive Equipment and Technology assessment?

Assistive technology assessments are needed when NDIS participants want to receive equipment and technology that they believe will improve their functional independence.
The NDIS will only fund assistive equipment and technology if it is meets the NDIS’ “reasonable and necessary criteria”. To ensure the assistive equipment and technology is reasonable and necessary, the NDIS often requests Occupational Therapists either write a support letter or complete an NDIS form outlining the purpose and benefits of the equipment or technology.

How are they conducted?

An Occupational Therapist will write a letter or complete the NDIS’ “AT form” based on information from the Functional Assessment.
The NDIS Plan Manager or NDIA uses these reports to inform their decisions about funding purchases. The NDIA may ask the Occupational Therapist for more information.
Please note that I will refer mobility equipment requests to another Occupational Therapist

Sensory Assessments

While many people assume that everyone’s sensory system is “tuned” the same way, recently people are recognising that some people process sensory information differently. And sometimes sensory processing issues are the root causes of behavioural issues such as picky eating, sensitivity to noises/light and resistance to being in crowds (among others). Sensory Assessments, assess how people cope with the sensory information that enters their senses on a daily basis.

Why should I do a Sensory assessment?

Sensory Assessments help people to understand their sensory processing issues.
And by understanding their sensory processing issues, treatment programs to manage and gradually increase sensory inputs can be developed and implemented. This can help people with sensory processing issues to function better in their day to day life.

How are they conducted?

These assessments take approximately two hours and involve talking about how a person manages their sensory processing such as “seeking” or “avoiding” sensory stimuli.
